Food Justice DMV /Justicia Alimentaria DMV - with Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde

I recently photographed a fundraising event for Food Justice DMV/Justicia Alimentaria DMV, an organization that provides vital food sustenance to thousands in the DC metropolitan area.

The featured speaker was the distinguished Episcopal Bishop of Washington, Mariann Edgar Budde, in conversation with Rev. Nilse Furtado-Gilliam of the Clarendon United Methodist Church. They spoke of bravery, mercy, social justice, hope, the blessings and struggles of faith in our daily and political lives, and the necessity of joy as a sustaining presence.

Music and dancing was provided by Son Cosita Seria, who specialize in performing Son Jarocho music.

Thanks to Food Justice DMV founder Denise Woods and Deborah Thornton for this opportunity.

EDCJCC- D25 volunteers 2024

The Edlovitch DCJCC (the Washington DC Jewish Community Center) organized its annual D25 volunteer day to help those in need on Christmas.  I documented volunteers at  Central Union Mission,  DC Central Kitchen Christ House, Friendship House-La Casa, Loaves and FishesSasha Bruce Network's Passages Housing, and at the JCC itself.

This is my 30th year covering this citywide mission of charity, of tzedakah.

Thank you to the hard-working Sonya Weisburd and Mira Smith of the EDCJCC volunteer/social action program,  to the many hundreds of volunteers, to the staff members of these caring social service agencies, and especially to my wonderful partner Ruth Stromberg, who once again got up before dawn and ably provided caption material.

Volunteer Arlington- MLK day of service

Photographs made at the annual Volunteer Arlington at W-L High School to spend the day in service to the community as part of honoring the birthday and example of the late Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  Several hundred volunteers were busily engaged in a range of charitable activities. US Senator Mark Warner (D-VA) attended and made remarks, as did other local elected officials and community notables at the beginning of the program.

A day on, rather than a day off.

Thanks to Lisa Fikes,  Brenda Nardone, and Jen Roder, of the Leadership Center for Excellence.
