Faded / Glory - Autumn 2017

Scans of leaves gathered from an autumn walk with Ruth in Glencarlyn Park, near my home.

Large white flowers in my home

Thanks to Brenda Griffin, Ruth and I have these beautiful night-blooming flowers in our home this evening. Brenda and I also did a seed swap; my heirloom sunflower seeds from an Appalachian seed bank, and her home grown Angel's Trumpet seeds.

Operation Understanding DC, Class 23. DACA protest / Art House

Operation Understanding DC (OUDC) participants recently created signs to protest the current administration's anti-immigrantion policies. At the recently-opened community-activating Art House in DC, they created posters in support of DACA and 'dreamers.' They then marched through the city to a neighborhood with a significant immigrant population, distributing the posters along the way.

Advocates for Youth, Urban Retreat 2017

These photographs are from Advocates For Youth's annual Urban Retreat, in Washington DC.

From their mission statement: "Advocates for Youth partners with youth leaders, adult allies, and youth-serving organizations to advocate for policies and champion programs that recognize young people’s rights to honest sexual health information; accessible, confidential, and affordable sexual health services; and the resources and opportunities necessary to create sexual health equity for all youth."

Though serious and policy-oriented,  the event is also really fun, with a colorful, bright, and creative group of young leaders participating.

CeCe McDonald, an outspoken advocate and folk heroine for trans women of color was the keynote speaker.

I was glad to be of help again. Thanks to director Deb Hauser and all the energetic, highly-capable AFY staff.
