Sasha Lurje and Ilya Shneyveys, Berlin-based Latvian musicians in the Latvian psychedelic klezmer band Forshpil, recently were resident guest artists with Dr. Joel Rubin's University of Virginia Klezmer Ensemble.

Amazing musicians. Heart, soul, and beyond.

Sasha is one of the finest singers I have ever experienced. Stunning... and fun. She radiates the energies and spontaneity of a freeborn child, the dark depths of a delta blues artist, the kreykhs of an old-world Jewish neshama, and the soaring pipes of a classically-trained banshee.

And the band swirled into one's consciousness. Great stuff.

Black-Jewish Seder

I documented the second annual American Jewish Committee's Black-Jewish Unity Passover seder, in conjunction with Operation Understanding and other local groups, at the 6th & I Historic Synagogue, in Washington DC.

The Passover seder was co-led by Rabbi Shira Stutman of Sixth & I Synagogue, Pastor William  Lamar IV of Metropolitan AME Church, and Pastor Daryl  Kearney of Turner Memorial AME Church. Discussions relating to the holiday, focused on themes of liberation and social justice, were led by program director Avi Edelman and students from OUDC. Combined choirs from Sixth & I, Metropolitan AME Church, and Turner Memorial AME Church performed sacred music rising from the African-American and Jewish traditions.

Here are three spreads of portraits that I made on assignment for the American Psychological Association's magazines, APA Monitor, and gradpsych.

The women pictured are Dr. Michelle Kaufman, a noted human rights psychologist, Dr. Barbara Roberts, a respected clinician consulting on substance abuse issues with the National Football League, and Farzana Saleem, a clinic psychology graduate student at George Washington University.
