This is the 50th April Fool card.

I began creating these in 1974, but due to an inexplicable lapse in the Space/Time/Foolishness Continuum, all trace of 1975 vanished completely (this phenomenon has been referred to as "facete-flectitur tenebris foraminis" in the peer-rejected Journal of Incomprehensible Solopsisms.). It has since arrived dutifully on an annual basis.

I originally created the graphic of the peace sign, raised fist, and flower in 1969, fifty years ago, for Yer Analysis, my high school's underground paper.

Submarine removal

My brother Dean gave me notice that a cleaning crew was headed to my home this morning to effect the annual removal of unwanted submarines from my ceilings. I greatly appreciated his warning. Thankfully they arrived in a timely and professional manner, and proceeded to rid my dwelling of this yearly invasive scourge. For historic purposes, I took a photograph of the valiant crew at work in my library. 

With some pleasure, I can now report that my ceilings are once again 100% submarine-free.

Light & Lens: April Fool

My colleague Bob Hirsch recently released a second edition of his well-regarded textbook, Light and Lens: Photography in the Digital Age. He has highlighted two of my annual April Fool's cards in the book, on a full page spread.

Personal Albums: April Fool & Student Body

Two collections of my work, April Fool and Student Body will be shown in the Bodzin Gallery of the JCC of Northern Virginia. The exhibition runs from November 2, 2010 through January 4, 2011.

I have been sending April Fools collages to friends and family annually since 1974. The student Body work is a collection of enlarged SX-70 polaroid images. It is the first public showing of both these bodies of work.

I have just published three new book collections of my work.

Student Body, which consists of polaroids taken in 1979;

April Fool
which is a collection of all my annual April Fool's greeting collages sent since the first one was created ( in a small hand-made edition) in 1974.

which is a collection of thoughtful portraits made in 1977 of students and staff at Woodlawn, an alternative high school in Arlington, VA.




These works are colorful, visually interesting, fun to look at, and a departure from my better-known documentary work.
