Quarantine Diary 23, part three | Street demonstration, some people, and other things I saw

These photographs were all made on Sixteenth Street NW, Washington DC.

Many demonstrations in support of the Black Lives Movement were going on.

The world also continued in its own way.
Ever and anon.

Eyes need to remain open.

Quarantine Diary 23, part two: Anti-Racism vigil on 16th Street NW DC

I photographed a vigil in DC to stand witness against racism. The many religious congregations along 16th Street NW have banded together to express their mutual solidarity and to offer prayers and witness for equal justice in our society. They are happening every Friday in June at 5:00 pm all along the thoroughfare. I photographed the vigil at the DC Jewish Community Center, where two women blew shofars (ram's horns) to mark the eight minutes and forty six seconds that Mr. George Floyd was choked to death, as the many bells all up and down this street of churches, synagogues, and houses of worship pealed out their righteous clarion call.

The shofar blowers are Amanda Herring of the JCC and Shana Finkel.

May the walls come tumbling down. "Justice, justice shall you pursue." צדק צדק תרדוף

Quarantine Diary 23 - Black Lives Matters -Juneteenth chalk art in Arlington

In celebration of Juneteenth, and in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement, a number of neighbors in the Boulevard Manor community in Arlington, Virginia created chalk art messages on their streets, driveway and sidewalks.

Apparently some neighbor called the County's public works department and a crew was sent to power-wash all of the artwork away.

This has caused an uproar in both the neighborhood and in the community, with Arlington County elected representatives making an official apology for this situation.

Thank you to my friend, Lynn Lunger, who alerted me to the news. Her daughter, a recent high school graduate, is pictured here.

New artwork has sprung up on the streets.

Black Lives Matter.

Quarantine Diary 22 | Vigil, Call to Action, Arlington VA

Coverage of the South Arlington Vigil and Call to Action for justice and an end to racism.

It was held in the field of the Charles Drew Model School, in the historically African-American Green Valley neighborhood.

The vigil was organized by Black Parents of Arlington, Ms Yolande Kwinana, and Delegate Alfonso Lopez. Moving presentations from schools, civic groups, politicians, activists, performing artists, and our police department were made. Social distancing, due to the continued COVID-19 virus pandemic, were adhered to.

Black Lives Matter.
