In July 2013, as part of the Jerusalem Stories project, I visited the Temple Mount in the Old City, also known as Haram al-Sharif, the Noble Sanctuary, to Muslims. I was accompanied by Yoni Sheffer, an Israeli Jewish scholar of Arabic.
For Jews, the area is the site of the ancient temple originally founded by King Solomon, the Holy of Holies, destroyed by Trajan's Roman legions in 70 CE.
For Muslims, it is the site of the Night Journey by Mohammed, and the location of the Al Aqsa Mosque.
