Elizabeth Cotten

I made this portrait of blues musician Elizabeth Cotten at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington DC in July 1972.

Libba Cotten was a gentle and deep artist, who  influenced many. Her song "Freight Train" is considered a classic.

I had only been a photographer for about a year when I made this picture, at that point still largely self-taught.
